Adding light, colour and flow to a small garden space

Dominated by imposing Leylandii hedging, this garden needed a much lighter touch to create privacy, useable areas, interesting focal points and dynamic, low maintenance planting. New pathways and a private dining space were connected together to establish flow and ‘picture windows’ were formed within this wide, shallow space. A patio pergola planted with golden hops creates natural summer shade without winter gloom in this tricky North-facing garden. Calming, low maintenance water bowls reflect light and movement of grasses, drawing the eye across the space. Vibrant foliage and contrasts of green, yellow and orange flowers add colour and structural interest throughout the year, for example the combination of Sorbus Golden Wonder underplanted with Cornus flaviramea for a stunning yellow berries and stems effect throughout winter.

“We are delighted with both sections of our garden that were designed and planted by Emma and are admired by all who see them.
We had a couple of requirements which we discussed with her and then gave her an almost free hand. Whatever she suggested turned out to be exactly what we wanted, reflecting her careful consideration of our tastes and the surroundings.
The resulting design is imaginative and inspired. She worked closely with Fine Home for the hard landscaping and pergola build to ensure the success of the project as a whole. It is a joy now to watch the development of the planting schemes through the seasons.”
