Following a renovation, the clients wanted to create a new outdoor living space, incorporating dining and sitting areas in sun and shade, all staying true to the wider woodland environment. The priority was to keep a natural, ‘managed wild’ look for the garden with wildlife and family friendly design and planting.
We worked with the existing contours of the site, linking a series of new areas with black limestone paving to create practical access from front to back for wheelchairs and party stilettos alike. The hard landscaping and black painted pergola was then softened with planting which had to be cat friendly; fox, deer and squirrel proof; as well as palatable for hayfever sufferers. With a modest budget, screening had to be started using young trees, selecting crabapple, hawthorn and birches which provided year-round interest from the outset.
With the garden construction phase having to endure winter snow and then Covid restrictions, all parties adapted to the challenges using a variety of different communications. The clients maintain the garden themselves using the provided monthly maintenance plan
